Images from the Flood

Slate has posted a photo piece on the floods in Pakistan. The intro suggests that a lack of attention and relief funding may be due to the low shock value of floods as opposed to other types of natural disasters.

Despite this lack of attention, as was discussed at the Mekong Migration Network conference in Chiang Mai this past week, migration due to climate change will probably rise considerably in coming years and decades, with low-lying flood plains in various parts of the world likely to be highly effected by increasing glacial runoffs from global warming. Floods will increase, displacing vast communities, destabilizing agricultural production centers, and threatening local livelihoods. Weather patterns may also shift substantially, adding further variables.

Images like these, then: to be expected in increasing numbers. See here for more.
